OUR SERVICES Our Seating and Mobility Specialists, certified technicians and customer care staff have the training and experience to provide cost efficient solutions for the clients' rehab and assistive technology needs. We recommend the most appropriate products to assure client satisfaction, compliance and improved outcomes.

Typically, a new wheelchair or seating system order can take up to eight weeks from evaluation to final fitting and delivery. We monitor and measure each step of the process to ensure that the paperwork is managed efficiently, effectively and timely. And our staff communicates each stage of the order and delivery process with the client.

Disease/Injury Management: When a client is diagnosed with a progressive disease or a traumatic injury, we offer comprehensive packages that will satisfy their long-term seating and mobility needs. For example, in the case of Multiple Sclerosis or ALS, we provide technology that readily and economically adapts to the person's changing physical needs.

Client Education: Product education is essential for client safety and compliance. Clients are shown how to effectively use and care for their new system and assurances are made that they are comfortable with their technology.

Powered or Manual Mobility: If a client needs powered mobility, we can provide versatile seating and mobility systems and drive controls that will cost-effectively adapt to their changing physical needs. We also can provide a scooter or a basic power wheelchair for the less involved client.

Seating & Positioning: Seating and positioning needs must be addressed whether the client is growing, living with a progressive disease or lives with positioning challenges that affect the client's ability to study or work in various environments. Our evaluation includes a comprehensive look at what will be the client's daily activities today and what the client and case manager's goals are for tomorrow. Molding simulators assist our staff in customizing a back and seat to the contours of a client's deformities providing needed orthopedic support. Computerized pressure mapping systems show us where a client is most likely to incur a pressure ulcer. Information obtained during the evaluation and simulation helps identify the type of seating system that will be recommended. We also provide standing systems and other devices that help with circulation and help fight against potential pressure ulcers.

Kids: We know the variations and growth capabilities of the hundreds of pediatric manual and power wheelchair and positioning system configurations. We have the knowledge to provide the right system that will give a child a chance to focus on schoolwork instead of struggling just to sit upright. We often talk with school therapists and teachers about the child's diagnosis and functional needs.

Adults: Some adults have had a wheelchair all their lives. Others are just learning to live with a recent diagnosis that might be from a traumatic injury or a progressive disease. Every adult's assistive technology requirements are unique based on their home and work environment, transportation and personal goals.

Preventative maintenance is important to ensure the long-term use of any product. Like any key investment, wheelchairs and seating and positioning devices that receive regular maintenance will help to ensure their best performance.

Owners, family members and caregivers can help by following these general maintenance and use guidelines.

Maintenance:

  • Keep your chair clean. As needed, wipe off dirt, sand, mud, moisture and road salt.
  • If you wipe down your chair at least once a month, you will also notice if a bolt is loose, a bar is cracked or some minor change to your chair.
  • Make sure all hardware is securely attached.
  • Check your wheel locks or other braking mechanism.
  • Check your pneumatic tire pressure.
  • Check your wheels and casters for wobble or trueness. Check tires for excessive wear.
  • Check for rips or tears in the upholstery.
  • Check that the crossbrace (for folding chairs) folds and unfolds smoothly without sticking.

General Use:

  • If your physical condition or body weight changes, ask your physician or therapist if your chair is still right for your needs.
  • While your power mobility is turned on, do not use communication devices such as cellular phones, walkie-talkies, or a CB. They could interfere with your drive controls.
  • Use only batteries approved for use with your power mobility system.
  • Always plug your power mobility system battery into a grounded outlet.

These are general maintenance and use guidelines. If you have any questions, please call your nearest United Seating & Mobility location.
